IDS11 Toronto

They said it was going to be Good

And they were right!

Reservations? When you attend a trades-show thousand of miles away and make the investment to attend, you can often have feelings of trepidation asking your self 'is it worth it?' YES, it was!

Toronto is a very social city when it comes to networking, especially in business. As the saying goes,"it's not what you know, it's who you know". It's always great to see high school friends creating successful careers in the corporate giants of the Big Smoke. Sarah Richardson is very good friends of mutual high school mates and Sarah was kind enough to chat for moment. Her biz is ba-ba-booming. It was incredible to see the throngs of people, she is much like a rock star at the show, so many photo opp's and people asking of her time.

The Good or Bad: In recent years it's been a mixed bag going back to Toronto, since the global economy crunch has had it's impact on trade shows, with the likes of the CGTA and IDS but this year's IDS Toronto was really a fun show from all accounts.
The opening night party was full of electric energy, from the free Champagne and mini burgers/sliders to the kicking the funky beats Dj, it really felt much like a club with super high end designer products fulfilling your interior creative desires. You couldn't help but leave the party Thursday night with some kinetic energy for the design year ahead. Friday was Professional Trades Day, it was a busy day with great attendance all day long.
Does this mean the recession is really over? Hmm

Bravo: The Fall IDS West in Vancouver and now with this show in Toronto there is a definite change happening, IDS is doing a fantastic job in repositioning designing community in front of the customers/consumers. With a wealth of suppliers, manufactures, entrepreneurial artisans the horizon for the industry is bright. Evan Cars were present, well a car, Audi was on display with there new A7 in Toronto center stage. Nothing like a little bling bling for cross branding to make a statement. It's a nice car... really nice.

Finds: There is more to come from the IDS11, I will be featuring some the interesting artisan I met, as well product reviews and a little back ground on the drive to make it!

Kendall Charcoal Concrete

Colour for the Year?

Ever year starts of with predictions of what will be the next big thing and in interior design colours are always key to trends and patterns. Here at Distinct, we see a trend not so much 'starting up', rather a trend 'continuing on' as awareness to Lime Plaster Mantels in Vancouver grows.

From the recent jobs in 2010, 80% of them included a 'concrete colour' for the plaster finish. Kendall Charcoal from Benjamin Moore is the most common colour for concrete. It has a neutral colour of gray and is incredibly versatile with any colour pallet. It is our go to colour when in doubt!

Did
you know? Waiting for the trends and colours of the 80's to make it back in fashion, can be...well... a little to optimistic.

Stars & Stripes Part II

Randy Orr - Thursday, January 20, 2011

We did say there would be Colour

Turquoise + White + Grey = Lime Plaster Texture

Starts with a Grey Base of Lime Plaster for this Mantel

Then we added the Turquoise & White Lime Plasters

Tomorrow will add another layer to build the depth, then finish coats next week.

Now the reason for so much movement of colour may not be apparent at this point, but once the finish coat is on, the colour values of the plaster will blend together to create a more 'pacific coral' colour, which is present in the Mantels concrete top.

As I said in a recent post, this not norm in Vancouver colour design. But it is refreshing to be working on project that just challenges your colour design senses.

Stars & Stripes Shower

For the Dogs

What the next trend in interior decor, Doggy showers!
Yes the pooch is getting the pampering these days in custom homes. My client obviously has a passion for her FIVE dogs and the Stars & Stripes too.

Big enough for me, yet not for me - it's a dog's Life!

This is the mantel / Regency gas fireplace, where we will be installing a Lime Plaster Intonachino Mantel.
It's starting off white, but not for long. Colour is the flavor for this client, colour they will have. Stay tuned...

Honeysuckle Colour of the Year

Randy Orr - Thursday, January 13, 2011

FYI Colour!

In case you missed it, the colour of 2011 is Honeysuckle Pantone 18-2120.

This striking Redish/Pink colour represents "... the happy rediscovery of growth and energy of looking forward rather than bemoaning what we have lost." According to Keith Recker, colour forecaster. Sounds good to me, but I venture there won't be much call for Honeysuckle Mantels.

Colour is funny thing in the industry of interior design in Vancouver. We seem to trend to the whites, off whites and shades of Gray for the most part, seldom do you walk into a residence that is full of bright & rich colours. This became apparent to me today, since I am starting a Lime Plaster Mantel in very colourful new residence.

My first reaction as I walked into the home was, ...Woh!... but after few moments and taking in the environment, the colours provided a different feeling. There is no right way or wrong way
when it is your home, if works for you, then good for you!

I will share some picture of the colourful project I'm working on in the week ahead.

A Compelling Story

New Year's Feel Good Story...

This story about Ted Williams has nothing to do with what we do. Yet, can't help but feel inspired by such a humble man. Can only hope he makes it and I look forward to hearing his voice - wow!

The Golden Voice in the news.

Happy New Year

Randy Orr - Tuesday, January 04, 2011

This not the North-pole

Yes it is cold out, it's January after all.

My wife and I were completely surprised when we went for walk on New Years to discover the beaches behind us were frozen! Looks more like the real great North, rather than the South of Canada!!

Not to worry the rains will return in preparation for Spring.
Hope the year ahead is full of challenges and note worthy rewards for you.
Now I'm off to work on some fire pppp places.... and get warmmmmm!
