Art Walk

I spent the later part of last week in Seattle, it was an interesting time to be in the Emerald city. Since Art Walk was happening, well sort of. Traditional on the first Thursday of every month art takes center stage in Pioneer Square, as artist and galleries open the doors. Unfortunately there seems to be less doors to open, the galleries are fewer and the 5 story Art Studio building  is closing since it is not safe, seismic repairs beyond repair, thus it is coming down.
That said, Art Prevails into the streets and the spirit was evident.

Lime Plaster Planter Box Update

Dwell - is it summer or not?

Hope this post finds you in the mist of Summer, but if your in the Vancouver area, then you can only wish for another day of Sun and Run of temperatures reminding us it is SUMMER! Yes?

There is reason to celebrate it is Summer though, since our Dwell style Lime Plaster Planters Box's have turned ONE. And Yes, they have survived a full year of a Canadian four seasons, with flying colours I might add! You might remember this post from last August, Dwell?

We use bees wax to seal the KCC 2011 on the top of the boxes,(once in the Spring & once in the Fall) it works beautifully to help repel water.
Since the soil is most, the Lime Plaster works well in holding the moisture through the cool winter and releasing the moisture naturally as the temperatures rise in the summer time, no cracks appear or remain even with the extremes of exterior climate.

Organic Lime Plaster, it is the most versatile 4000 year old product you haven't work with - yet!

Lime Plaster and Textures

Walls worth Touching

Sure, touching the walls we create are all about the senses. Not just for your eyes, but the feel is just as important. It is the mark of craftsmanship.

We generally create so many different styles of Mantels using Lime Plasters, ...smooth clean lines and concrete finishes. It's a refreshing change to get back once and a while, to our roots of decorative arts - working on walls. Lime Plaster walls can be more than your typical venetian plaster, you just have to be open to trying new techniques and have a passion for it. "It' better to create, than replicate!" that's my mantra.

If you have been reading our blog posts from time to time, you may recognize this dripping Lime Plaster finish. We created it last summer for a private residence in Vancouver and the designer enjoyed it so much we were asked to again, here in Langley, BC this time.

So... What's on your Walls?

Via Little Italy in Burnaby

Even Grand-mama Loves Lime Plaster Mantels

In one of our recent Mantel projects in Burnaby, a suburb of Vancouver, we were presented with a 'plain jane' marble surround - it wasn't cutting it for interior of the home, nor for Grand-mama.

But we had the cure, since once I was able to explain the process of how we can re-work the existing surround and build onto it and create a new Mantel with Lime Plaster. Lime Plaster from Italy, ...Grand-mama's home land ....we were in!

We created custom legs, a hearth and used Old World profiles on the Mantel header to give it rustic presence with a little European sophistication. We sourced photos of old mantels and new for inspiration, yet came back to the standard of strong legs and a large Mantel header to help build the presence of this piece.

Custom Works

We like creating the 'new school' in Mantels design, but I think it is important to go back to the Old World roots once and a while.

Ciao!

Aloha

Everyday Aloha

Taking a Break...
Do
you ever get that feeling when you go away for awhile where, 'Home & Work' turn to a new direction for your new 'Home & Play'(albeit a brief stay). You are gone just long enough to know that life is really good, and full of Mahalo!

I sure do, especially when visiting Hawaii, it seems to be just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of North American culture and race.
That reminds me of a good quote, "Even if you win the rat race, your still a rat."

That is why when you sit on a little rock in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, you just shake your head and think why is everyone on the big rock(North America) moving so fast?
Hawaiian Polynesians and the Culture of Hawaii offer just the right amount of Aloha for everyday laid back life & style.

Maui is the perfect mix of beaches for sun worshiping, running & yoga. The land is rich with robust plants, tropical birds, fresh fruit, fish varieties and of coarse a stellar ocean for surfing, swimming and paddle boarding... or doing nothing but ...floating...

You can't go to a land of an original and not try 'The' Original. That is why during our stay we made the tough pilgrimage to see how the other half live in the resorts of Wailea, the Four Seasons, Fairmont Kea Lani and the Grand Wailea. We space out our trips to the resorts in search of the perfect Mai Tai.

After tasting what each resort had in there offering of a Hawaiian Mai Tai...there was a clear winner = Fairmont Kea Lani. They took the time to create a beautiful arrangement and genuine ingredients, which makes all the difference.
So there you go, a little homework on Mia Tai. Just make sure you bring your Visa, nothing is cheap at the resorts!

What about plaster? Did I see any on the island of Maui? Yes, I will have blog post coming on what I found and it was of course fitting it involved surfing. Lime Plaster and Surfing... there is a connection Maui style.

As for Stucco Plaster, there was plenty at the resorts since the exterior is the interior. No need for doors or windows, just grand lobbies created with contemporary vast Polynesian themes that just make you go, "...why don't I live here?"

Pics below, Mahalo...

For a Contemporary Vancouver Home

What is in the mix for a Concrete fireplace surround 18 feet high in this contemporary Home?

Q?

Can you build a 18' high x 6' wide Fireplace Surround made of Concrete inside a finished home?

Answer.

Probably not, since the weight would be far too much for the existing foundation.

Solution!

Lime Plaster Surrounds, light in weight, easy to install and completely open to design/style. In this residence we used KCC2011(Kendall Charcoal Concrete)

Do you do Restaurants?

Randy Orr - Friday, April 15, 2011

We sure Do

I received a call yesterday from a designer asking if we ever work on restaurants?

My reply was "indeed" and we love hospitality biz, since it provides tight time lines, tight budgets and always full surprises. And in Vancouver, we have had plenty of spaces to create distinctive finishes.

Unfortunately for our restaurant clients it's a really tough business. I think the stats are 90% of restaurant fail in there first year of business - ouch!

Here is where our hands have been, perhaps you have been to one of them?

Lime Plaster Wine Cellar in Vancouver

Lime Plaster and Wine

In this post
I'm taking it way back, to where some of Lime Plaster origins commenced - Walls and Ceilings. We were recently commissioned to help in the creation of a Wine Cellar for this West-side residence, where we were presented with four 9'x7' Walls  and a 9'x9' Ceiling. The client had already began to paint the walls and ceiling before I had arrived, I thought to myself, "YIKES!"

"You have invested a 6 figure Wine Collection and your going surround it with acrylic paint hosting VOC 's - not a good way to protect your storied Collection."

Stop everything, back to the drawing board!
How about starting with the basics, the way the Italians and French did and still do - Lime Plaster. Then let's take it one step forward, to today's trends - Concrete. I decided to install on the Walls and Ceiling KCC 2011, creating a clean lined subway tile grid on the ceiling and rustic weeping Cellar Cement Walls.

Of course the Cellars dwelling is completely the opposite to the rest of the interior in the home (a very nice one, I might add!)

Bordeaux Inspiration

Since the wine collection hosts wines from Bordeaux we decided, along with the client, to make it part of the theme. 'The Wine of the Century' Chateau Latour would be the keystone, and elements from the Chateau Latour label would be incorporated. This helped provide a vision for the 4 Walls and Ceiling as the project evolved, a sense of the Old World winery, in a contemporary West-side home.

Case and Point

Lime Plasters are perfectly suited for Wine Cellars or other areas where moisture could be a concern, since Lime Plaster hosts no VOC, is mold and fungus resistant, a perfect organic choice  in protecting against cork spoilage. The Lime Plaster Walls and Ceiling actually help the modern cooling system, in creating a stable climate for the room, holding the temperature and humidity in balance.
