I guess one of the benefits of being in a industry like interior design for a while is that you get to see trends come and go. 'Time equals change'
Back in November I posted about the catalog from RESTORATION HARDWARE mentioning the numerous pictures of Lime Plaster walls and Fireplaces incorporating the finishes into the settings. It was nice to see a major interior retailer providing such exposure to relatively under noted finish - plaster.
In the past week I was down in Seattle and had a moment to duck into a RH store and was really surprised at the complete make over the entire store. Gary Friedman is the CEO of RH, has taken the tough times in recent years to go true to his direction and beliefs for what RH is about, in his words "Today's Restoration Hardware is a personal expression of what we believe in, design we are passionate about, produced by artisans who in their own right are creating a cultural revolution." - I like that.
And what I like more is the warmth and textures of the furnishings in the current store. Furnishings evoking yesteryear craftsmanship(built to last) with old world grandeur, yet with lines that fit today's interiors.
If interior trends run a cycle, like fashion, then I can guess what is coming next.... can you?
So you know... we do Yoga out here, hike the Grind and take the work week with a different pace... that's the Vancouver Life Style. Were different from the East. That's why we take it in stride when we meet with clients and they share their vision of what an Organic Lime Plaster Mantel could look like. In this case, they made the rendering out of left over granola box - love it!
Nothing like a simple pencil drawing to hash out the details... good enough for us.
We can roll with this!
Next week we start on these 2 Lime Plaster Mantles, one will be in KCC 2011 - Kendall Charcoal Concrete, creating the appearance of 9' x 7' solid concrete fireplace in this heritage home, yet no real weight to the structural framing of the home since we are 85% lighter than concrete.
The other is custom colour to compliment the kitchen wall colours, should be fun! We will make this colour on the go as the build progress on site, it's best way to fine tune the fireplace colour in this case.
Well YES!
Of course I only had to wait in line for 3 hours since I was joined with my with my good friend James Nicholson. James accompanied me on my quick trip down to Seattle on Friday and the
timing was perfect, since I had a couple of meetings in the morning. I
dropped James off at University Village where the Apple store is located around 10am, we were numbers 33 & 34 in line. The line grew and grew from there all day long.
At 2:30 they locked the doors, pulled a big black curtain across the windows and the anticipation increased!
Finally at 4:30 the Apple staff came out of the store and did a loop around the entire crowd of 500 plus, 'High Five'ng' everyone, it brought the level of excitement up and the doors open at 5 sharp.
At 5:15 we were done! iPad2 in hand.
What brand to create such an enthusiastic response!
Running to catch up to the requests for Lime Plaster Mantels interest. BUILDEX was a fun show since it comes and goes so fast. Two day set up, 2 day show and take it down... then run to catch up to the work that you put on hold during the show! One of the fun features of our booth was having a 'concrete wall' which was not concrete.
KCC 2011 is the a fantastic finish for the look and feel of concrete, without the weight.
The offer was open to the visitor in the booth to 'Touch Me' - the walls that is!
I love the energy that comes with trade-show set up. There are so many task to fall into place and when one doesn't(seldom is it one) you need to make quick calls of action to change the plan, but not the master plan.
That is the way day 2 went for us. Our booth at Buildex this year behind where we were last. Therefore the both needs modifications to accommodate the opposite layout.
The Theme
This year's booth at Buildex is about the outdoors and the deep woods. We are going to have a campfire - really, a campfire, with a little help from KCC2011 to create the theme.Come on by to warm up! Campfire
You can't have a campfire without some rocks to protect the area... we are building it to the unwritten code(of campfires that is).
Tomorrow we will be lighting the fire(s), seems like the right thing to do since we are in the middle arctic cold snap.
It's that time of year again, once a year leaders in the construction industry in British Colombia and Western Canada get to exhibit their qualities that make them Distinct to the Home and Renovation industry. It's a great B2B trade-show with everything under the sun for constructing a masterpiece!
The transformation from nothing to something begins...
Day 1 done...
Distinct Interiors is The Leader in traditional finishes,
in none traditional applications.
KCC2011 is the answer to where you would like to have a Concrete surface, yet not the weight or the wait! At Buildex we are excited to introduce:
