Decorative Artistry in Furniture

Is it really rust?

That was my first observation when I came across Wheeler's Studio cabinet below, at IDS11 in Toronto.
The sliding blue door on this cabinet is actually made of MDF and faux painted by artist Jason Wheeler.

Jason's furniture is a build between modern and industrial, "it is the focus of what I do" he said.
Creating weathered appearances to wood and raw steel, with an eye for sourcing local woods, reclaimed or farmed wood.
Take a look at his website, you'll see the works of art that function as cabinetry.

10/10 is what I will give him for is trompe l'oeil rusting samples below.
As Jason said "I study and look at rust" - very well done!

Jason's business is in Oshawa, Ontario. Custom orders is part of his business model, contact info below.

IDS11 Toronto

They said it was going to be Good

And they were right!

Reservations? When you attend a trades-show thousand of miles away and make the investment to attend, you can often have feelings of trepidation asking your self 'is it worth it?' YES, it was!

Toronto is a very social city when it comes to networking, especially in business. As the saying goes,"it's not what you know, it's who you know". It's always great to see high school friends creating successful careers in the corporate giants of the Big Smoke. Sarah Richardson is very good friends of mutual high school mates and Sarah was kind enough to chat for moment. Her biz is ba-ba-booming. It was incredible to see the throngs of people, she is much like a rock star at the show, so many photo opp's and people asking of her time.

The Good or Bad: In recent years it's been a mixed bag going back to Toronto, since the global economy crunch has had it's impact on trade shows, with the likes of the CGTA and IDS but this year's IDS Toronto was really a fun show from all accounts.
The opening night party was full of electric energy, from the free Champagne and mini burgers/sliders to the kicking the funky beats Dj, it really felt much like a club with super high end designer products fulfilling your interior creative desires. You couldn't help but leave the party Thursday night with some kinetic energy for the design year ahead. Friday was Professional Trades Day, it was a busy day with great attendance all day long.
Does this mean the recession is really over? Hmm

Bravo: The Fall IDS West in Vancouver and now with this show in Toronto there is a definite change happening, IDS is doing a fantastic job in repositioning designing community in front of the customers/consumers. With a wealth of suppliers, manufactures, entrepreneurial artisans the horizon for the industry is bright. Evan Cars were present, well a car, Audi was on display with there new A7 in Toronto center stage. Nothing like a little bling bling for cross branding to make a statement. It's a nice car... really nice.

Finds: There is more to come from the IDS11, I will be featuring some the interesting artisan I met, as well product reviews and a little back ground on the drive to make it!

Wine Cellar

Cellar Dweller... but for a Good Cause

It's usually not a lot fun to spend the work day in a small dark cool room in a basement. Unless it is for Wine!
Yes a Wine Cellar!! Do you love Wine? I do and nothing better than creating a room to provide a little ambiance to where a collection of 'nectar of the Gods' will be residing.

For this project of course it involves Lime Plaster, specifically Marmorino and Intonachino will be my go to plaster for the ceilings and walls.
Also installing ceiling beams, the neat part about the ceiling beams is that we decided to incorporate some state of the art LED Lighting... it will be installed shortly. This type of band or rope light, is like nothing I have ever seen... I will take a picture and post it, crazy technology!

It's a perfect fit for what we need to do...

Hot Baking

A Taste of French Sophistication

Only the coldest day of the year in Vancouver, it seems fitting that Faubourg is OPEN for business.

It's not often, actually never... that I blog about a project where our services, were not used.
It was in the plans to have some Lime Plaster decorative treatments during construction, but like many major upgrades to older buildings, the budget was quickly consumed!
Not to worry, our loss is Vancouver's gain.
If you have been to Paris and had breads from the local bakeries, then you know what I'm referring too.
During the prepping for the opening, Franck Point(Proprieter/MasterBaker) from Lyon in France, provided some samples of the croissants and in house breads. Franck is very passionate and professional for detail - he is Vancouver's pastry 'Ratatouille'.
The croissants were so good... they melted in my mouth, I decided I had to blog about the opening!
So - if your near 41st and Arbutus(2156 West 41st), do go by... you are in for a fantastic treat!

Plaster is Everywhere

in the new Restoration

Yesterday was one of those fantastic and rare autumn days in Vancouver, warm, supper sunny, great to be outside and in the city with the family. We went to a favorite, Stanely Park for a walk, then window shopping, ducking in and out of shops on West 10th and South Granville. It's always interesting to see what the major home finishing stores like Restoration Hardware have in mind for the season to come.
Interesting...what do you see in this cover?

It's Restoration Hardware furniture, lights and accessories. Obviously, a very nice Old World Mantel too.
But I would look closer, what is the Mantel made of? Plaster, most likely and so are the walls. In fact, out 300 pages in the new catalog, 60% of the photos involve Plaster Walls and Plaster Mantels. Pick one up, have look for your self.

...Always the interesting part when it comes to staging a picture or staging a room for a certain look.
The one with a keen eye, sees the some is greater than all of the parts. Just as all of the parts must look and be complimentary to each other. Therefore, start with something great, Lime Plaster Walls and Lime Plaster Mantels - Picture Perfect!

Great to see the big boys catching on to the most authentic, versatile and 'green' architectural finish of our times.

A Touch of Panache in Quebec

Historic - Contemporary Mantels

A while back, my wife & I had fantastic few days in Quebec City and I having been meaning to share some pictures of a particular spot...

If you are heading to Quebec City in the near future, then make a rewarding stop for dinner at Panache.
It is perfect blend between old and new design, with a 19th century maritime warehouse as the back drop of the interior to perfectly decorate with modern fixings. We were very taken with the warmth and coziness of the interior in Panache, well balanced with old post and beams, granite walls, plaster walls, stone floors, wood floors and great natural light despite being in the middle of an old warehouse.

Most important:
two fireplaces Mantels caught my eye for inspiration. Both contemporary, these Mantels incorporate Limestone in their design and fit the rooms gracefully, see the pictures below.

Simple, well placed and effective.

The Surround is 25' high.

Now that is a wall! Check out the THICKNESS, built to last hundreds of years.

Plaster walls in the common halls.

How about the food? Eat Very Well!

Bloom Collection

I was down at the IDS West show over this past weekend at saw some very interesting and refreshing styles/designs. I do attend a vast amount of trade shows and generally they are 50/50 take it or leave it. But IDS West was well represented with various 'new' booths and products, easy to navigate, in & out in minutes for traffic(on a Friday, that's pretty good)

One cool concept/product was MTH Woodworks, it's a distinct idea and organic in design. Very sharp and different.

On an Old Idea with a new Twist

This week we started the renovation of the new home for the Distinct Interiors Studio. Since there is always a creative opportunity when renovating your space, we decided to take a little architectural license and really re-think the space Distinct needs for it's new Home/Work/Rest/Play. So here we go: The ManShed.ca

Let's Get Physical

Let's Get Physical! "Let me hear your body talk . . ." Olivia Newton-John

Do you remember that song, if you do, then you are product of the 80's and remember some really bad videos. But hey, that is what makes memories of the 80's great... we survived & MTV was born.
Ok, I realize that is a little different for an intro heading, yet it's the only thought that keeps coming to my mind as I try to describe our most recent feature wall project. It was very Physical to create, "no pain, no gain"!

Feature Wall
It's a display suite for a local developer.

'Necessity is the Mother of all Creation'
The challenge for this wall was to have the plaster thick enough to carve while wet, yet not heavy or it would fall of the wall! Hmm, well that is when I began testing a variety of additives to thicken the plaster to help it set to a certain state, before it becomes impossible to work with, to hard. Vuala! I found something to allow this to occur, ...wasn't easy discovery especially on the hottest days of the summer, but it seemed to work out really well.

Hotel Lucia

Randy Orr - Tuesday, September 14, 2010

Style with a modern edge

In a recent trip to Portland I came across the Hotel Lucia, like most boutique hotels I find the interiors so compelling with modern or creative design choices. In this case, it was great to find a little private sitting area left of the main lobby. The art work through out the lobby is very eye catching, good enough to draw me in. That is when I discovered this sharp off-set mantle for possible future reference.
Interested?
This is a granite mantle with a grid running vertically and horizontally cuts. Love it!

The hearth is mounted 12" off the floor, a sharp way to create space/lift to the appearance. It's different and it works!
