Is it Metal or Marble?

Randy Orr - Thursday, October 20, 2011

Do you like heavy Metal?

I don't, but working with Sheet Metal, we can definitely rock that. I thought it be would pretty cool to show case the versatility of Lime Plaster at IDSwest last weekend, on metal - sheet metal.

Since exhibiting at BUILDex back in 2010 I have had the opportunity to visit the Farimont Pacific Rim for quick lunches and have been taken by the White Carrara Marble in the lobby, it makes for very clean and contemporary feel.

I was inspired by it's simplicity and thought, why not show how Lime Plaster Carrara has the same qualities when addressed to a properly prepared surface, thus a little metal....more below.

By creating Mantels out of Sheet Metal, we have a relatively light and very strong material to build with and takes heat extremely well. The bonus for us at the trade-show is it helps showcase the versatility of Lime Plaster, in this case Carrara Marble - beautiful! ....Actually most people said "Wow or Cool" at the show.

Lime Plaster Overlays, can allow you to create the Look and Feel of stone - without the weight or cost.

Organic Lime Plaster, it is the most versatile 4000 year old product out there.

23' wide Contemporary Mantel

Randy Orr - Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Do you like the look of Concrete?

We do and it is a popular choice amongst our clients and designers. That's why we are receiving more interest in concrete Lime Plaster Mantels and Surrounds in Vancouver.

The fun part, being asked to create unique designs that really test the ideas of what you thought you couldn't be done with concrete, because of the size or cost involved in larger pieces.

But you can with KCC, Kendall Charcoal Concrete, the prefect Lime Plaster Overlay for seamless concrete designs.

Would you like to see this Mantel? I have great clients and many are open on site visits, this Mantel is on the West-side of Vancouver. Yes I would like a site visit!

--------------------------------------------------------------

We will be featuring Tadelakt for the month of October.

What you will see us create is:

  • 2 Custom Tadelakt Mantels and Fireplace Mantels with surrounds, one in Vancouver and the other in Tsawwassen
  • a Tadelakt shower, where we create a complete bathroom in Tadelakt. Seamless walls, ceiling, floor and sink! Yes a sink and shower made of Plaster!? Can it be done?... watch & see....
  • And a large install of Tadelakt in a restaurant in Vancouver, the largest ever! Once we get rolling or troweling I should say, we will share more...

IDSwest & Tadelakt in Vancouver

Randy Orr - Monday, October 03, 2011

That was Fun!

... and fast, that's what happens when good times are to be had. This years IDSwest show was pleasure to be a part of, from the Opening Night Party to the last customer at our booth on Sunday, the action didn't stop!

At IDSwest we introduced Tadelakt (lime plaster) to the Vancouver interior design community as a feature for creating Fireplace Mantels and Surrounds, Back-Splashes and Feature Walls - the response was great, since little is known about this Moroccan plaster. That is the interesting part about the word in it's self, foreign and distinct - just like the plaster.

If you couldn't make the show, there is what you missed!

People couldn't keep there hands off the stuff...

Lime Plaster Planter Box Update

Randy Orr - Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Dwell - is it summer or not?

Hope this post finds you in the mist of Summer, but if your in the Vancouver area, then you can only wish for another day of Sun and Run of temperatures reminding us it is SUMMER! Yes?

There is reason to celebrate it is Summer though, since our Dwell style Lime Plaster Planters Box's have turned ONE. And Yes, they have survived a full year of a Canadian four seasons, with flying colours I might add! You might remember this post from last August, Dwell?

We use bees wax to seal the KCC 2011 on the top of the boxes,(once in the Spring & once in the Fall) it works beautifully to help repel water.
Since the soil is most, the Lime Plaster works well in holding the moisture through the cool winter and releasing the moisture naturally as the temperatures rise in the summer time, no cracks appear or remain even with the extremes of exterior climate.

Organic Lime Plaster, it is the most versatile 4000 year old product you haven't work with - yet!

Lime Plaster and Textures

Walls worth Touching

Sure, touching the walls we create are all about the senses. Not just for your eyes, but the feel is just as important. It is the mark of craftsmanship.

We generally create so many different styles of Mantels using Lime Plasters, ...smooth clean lines and concrete finishes. It's a refreshing change to get back once and a while, to our roots of decorative arts - working on walls. Lime Plaster walls can be more than your typical venetian plaster, you just have to be open to trying new techniques and have a passion for it. "It' better to create, than replicate!" that's my mantra.

If you have been reading our blog posts from time to time, you may recognize this dripping Lime Plaster finish. We created it last summer for a private residence in Vancouver and the designer enjoyed it so much we were asked to again, here in Langley, BC this time.

So... What's on your Walls?

A contemporary fireplace surround

For a Contemporary Vancouver Home

What is in the mix for a Concrete fireplace surround 18 feet high in this contemporary Home?

Q?

Can you build a 18' high x 6' wide Fireplace Surround made of Concrete inside a finished home?

Answer.

Probably not, since the weight would be far too much for the existing foundation.

Solution!

Lime Plaster Surrounds, light in weight, easy to install and completely open to design/style. In this residence we used KCC2011(Kendall Charcoal Concrete)

Lime Plaster Wine Cellar in Vancouver

Randy Orr - Monday, April 11, 2011

Lime Plaster and Wine

In this post
I'm taking it way back, to where some of Lime Plaster origins commenced - Walls and Ceilings. We were recently commissioned to help in the creation of a Wine Cellar for this West-side residence, where we were presented with four 9'x7' Walls  and a 9'x9' Ceiling. The client had already began to paint the walls and ceiling before I had arrived, I thought to myself, "YIKES!"

"You have invested a 6 figure Wine Collection and your going surround it with acrylic paint hosting VOC 's - not a good way to protect your storied Collection."

Stop everything, back to the drawing board!
How about starting with the basics, the way the Italians and French did and still do - Lime Plaster. Then let's take it one step forward, to today's trends - Concrete. I decided to install on the Walls and Ceiling KCC 2011, creating a clean lined subway tile grid on the ceiling and rustic weeping Cellar Cement Walls.

Of course the Cellars dwelling is completely the opposite to the rest of the interior in the home (a very nice one, I might add!)

Bordeaux Inspiration

Since the wine collection hosts wines from Bordeaux we decided, along with the client, to make it part of the theme. 'The Wine of the Century' Chateau Latour would be the keystone, and elements from the Chateau Latour label would be incorporated. This helped provide a vision for the 4 Walls and Ceiling as the project evolved, a sense of the Old World winery, in a contemporary West-side home.

Case and Point

Lime Plasters are perfectly suited for Wine Cellars or other areas where moisture could be a concern, since Lime Plaster hosts no VOC, is mold and fungus resistant, a perfect organic choice  in protecting against cork spoilage. The Lime Plaster Walls and Ceiling actually help the modern cooling system, in creating a stable climate for the room, holding the temperature and humidity in balance.

What's on your Walls?

Randy Orr - Friday, February 11, 2011

It is a dog's Life - see

Some-times you have to see it to believe it. Back in Jan I had a post showing a clients new shower, not for them, but for the other THEM, the dogs! ....the real story is the super colourful Plaster Fireplace Mantel we just finished and I will get that in the next post.

But I think it's interesting to see something you don't see....
Here it is, a Patriot shower for your, dog(s). Today I saw it in use, for the whole family of 5, 3 Lab's and 2 Chiwawa's.

Everyone had just been to the beach for a long walk and where tidy clean when I arrived.
