What is old is NEW
I guess one of the benefits of being in a industry like interior design for a while is that you get to see trends come and go. 'Time equals change'

Back in November I posted about the catalog from RESTORATION HARDWARE mentioning the numerous pictures of Lime Plaster walls and Fireplaces incorporating the finishes into the settings. It was nice to see a major interior retailer providing such exposure to relatively under noted finish - plaster.
In the past week I was down in Seattle and had a moment to duck into a RH store and was really surprised at the complete make over the entire store. Gary Friedman is the CEO of RH, has taken the tough times in recent years to go true to his direction and beliefs for what RH is about, in his words "Today's Restoration Hardware is a personal expression of what we believe in, design we are passionate about, produced by artisans who in their own right are creating a cultural revolution." - I like that.
And what I like more is the warmth and textures of the furnishings in the current store. Furnishings evoking yesteryear craftsmanship(built to last) with old world grandeur, yet with lines that fit today's interiors.
If interior trends run a cycle, like fashion, then I can guess what is coming next.... can you?

Ready for Stockings
Since it is the beginning of December it's only fitting to have a rush on Mantels ready for the Holidays.
Here is a recently completed Marmorino Lime Plaster Mantel - a traditional look. A simple idea to enhance the Mantel's style, we added a 3" header for more depth with clean lines... perfect for adding stockings.
We completely covered the old brick, creating a smooth surface with the Marmorino Plaster, the natural properties of the plaster allow for a soft 'to the touch' feel once polished with bees wax. Yet remaining strong as stone.
You design it. Spec it. And we create it.

in the new Restoration
Yesterday was one of those fantastic and rare autumn days in Vancouver, warm, supper sunny, great to be outside and in the city with the family. We went to a favorite, Stanely Park for a walk, then window shopping, ducking in and out of shops on West 10th and South Granville. It's always interesting to see what the major home finishing stores like Restoration Hardware have in mind for the season to come.
Interesting...what do you see in this cover?
It's Restoration Hardware furniture, lights and accessories. Obviously, a very nice Old World Mantel too.
But I would look closer, what is the Mantel made of? Plaster, most likely and so are the walls. In fact, out 300 pages in the new catalog, 60% of the photos involve Plaster Walls and Plaster Mantels. Pick one up, have look for your self.
...Always the interesting part when it comes to staging a picture or staging a room for a certain look.
The one with a keen eye, sees the some is greater than all of the parts. Just as all of the parts must look and be complimentary to each other. Therefore, start with something great, Lime Plaster Walls and Lime Plaster Mantels - Picture Perfect!
Great to see the big boys catching on to the most authentic, versatile and 'green' architectural finish of our times.

We were invited in to do some stripping...
...Yes we have been stripping for about week now, mahogany veneer that it is!
And the client is loving it!!
The house is a 1950's rancher, with a mahogany surround and bookcases that have been seriously sun drenched of the years.
Back to the rescue is Distinct, helping to restore this contemporary design. Patience, patience and plenty of elbow grease is what is need for the prep.
We started to mix the stains today and start blending the sun burnt areas were the UV has lighten 80% of the panels, tomorrow will seal the surface to allow us to work on the perfect colour match for the entire area.
It's going to look stately and timely, once complete.
